China

China is the third biggest nation in the world. Its population is more than that of India’s population. China is our neighbor. The Himalayas lie between India and China. To the east of China lies the Pacific Ocean, to the north of china is the great Gobi Desert. The Chinese have ruled in this territory without any for the last 4000 years.

The first Chinese civilization grew in the great river valleys of two rivers-the Hwang Ho in the north and the Yangtze in the south. This civilization grew at the same time as the Harappan civilization in the Indus Valley in India. Even today, these river valleys are the most densely populated parts of China.

The Chinese are mostly farmers. In modern China, farmers do not own their farms. Each village has its own land. The villagers work on it together and the harvest is shared among them. The main crops grown in China are rice in the south and wheat and millet in the north. Silk, tea and cotton are also important and there is a large fishing industry. Chinese silk is famous all over the world. In fact, Chinese were the first to make silk. Their silk was sent to far off places – as far as Europe through the ancient silk route.

The Great Wall of China, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, is the longest wall in the world. This wall is about 2000 years old and more than 6000 kilometers long. The wall is made of stones and bricks. It is the only man-made structure visible form outer space.
